AR vs VR vs Mixed Reality: Which Is Right for Your Project?

The differences between augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality — devices, use cases, reach and cost — and how to choose the right XR technology.

AR, VR and mixed reality are often grouped under “XR”, but they solve different problems and reach very different audiences. Picking the right one is the difference between an experience people use and one that stays on the shelf.

Augmented reality (AR): the widest reach

AR places digital content on top of the real world, usually through a smartphone camera. With ARKit, ARCore and WebAR, an experience can reach almost anyone with a modern phone — no headset required.

  • Best for — product try-ons and visualisation, marketing campaigns, location-based games, education and in-store experiences.

Virtual reality (VR): full immersion

VR replaces the real world entirely. Standalone headsets such as Meta Quest made it wireless and affordable, while PC VR delivers the highest fidelity.

  • Best for — games, training simulations, therapy and rehabilitation, virtual tours and events.

Mixed reality (MR): digital objects in your room

Mixed reality headsets use colour passthrough to blend virtual objects with the real room — and let them interact with walls, tables and hands. Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro and Android XR headsets all support it.

  • Best for — training with real equipment, spatial productivity, tabletop and room-scale games, design reviews.

How to choose

  • Audience and hardware — do your users own headsets, or only phones?
  • Environment — should users see the real world, or leave it completely?
  • Interaction — tap and swipe, controllers, or hand and eye tracking?
  • Session length — quick moments suit AR; deep learning and play suit VR.
  • Distribution — App Store and Google Play, the Meta Horizon Store, visionOS, the web or enterprise device management.

Build once, reach more devices

OpenXR, Unity’s AR Foundation and XR Interaction Toolkit, and Unreal’s XR support let one project target several devices. We plan the interaction model around the hardware you need first, then add platforms without a rewrite.
